February is black history month, a time to look back but also forward, a time to remember and a time to never forget. Everybody knows Hush Puppies and it might even be a favorite good of yours. But have you ever wondered about where the name came from? I have to admit that I haven’t and it’s just another one of those things I don’t question, a thing that just is. But then I saw this explanation from a friends post on Facebook and I had to share.
Escaping slaves used to throw balls of fried corn meal out to distract the hounds from tracking them. The hounds stopped barking and tracking thanks to the corn meal which later adapted the name “hush puppies.”
